Description:
Altar cross, which was commissioned by Maximilian Dalison’s widow. Mrs Charlotte Dalison was granted a Grace and Favour apartment in 1886 and lived at the palace until 1913.In 1893 she commissioned the then relatively unknown architect and designer Edwin Lutyens do create a magnificent altar cross for the Chapel Royal. Lutyens designed it to fit with the existing Charles II period candlesticks, with a triangular base resting on three balls. It stands around four feet high and is made of brass. On the two front facing sides of the base is an inscription in Latin that translates as. "To the glory of Our Lord Jesus Christ and in the most beloved memory of Maximilian Dudley Digges Dallison: May God have mercy on his soul. This cross, placed on the altar of Christ in the Chapel Royal at Hampton, was dedicated to God by Grace Dallison, his wife, on the first Sunday of Advent in the year of human salvation. 1894"
