Born Morvich, Golspie, Sutherland, Ross-shire, son of James McD. & Isabella Miller, resident of Ardmore, Edderton, Rossshire. A reservist who joined the Paisley Burgh Police in April 1913, and was mobilised as a reservist at the outbreak of war. (his brother James is also a Paisley policeman).
