Warine Frederick Martindale was born in India 31 March 1894, the son of Lieutenant Colonel C.S. Martindale, of 32 Chapel Street, Belgrave Square, London.
He came to Winchester College from Mr. J.D. Holt's school at Margate in May 1907 and was in B House, Moberly's. He became Head of his House, a Commoner Prefect and a member of Sixth Book, and rowed bow in the School IV. Frederick also played in OTH XV in 1912 and represented his house in rowing and gymnastics. He left Winchester in the summer of 1912.
When war broke out he was in Canada, reading for the Bar and immediately returned to England, obtaining a commission in the 3rd Battalion Scots Guards. The battalion was then involved in the fighting near Ginchy, on the Somme, on the first day of the Battle of Flers-Courcelette, 15 September 1916. The attack was to see the first use of tanks in warfare, one being commanded by a Wykehamist, Lieutenant George Macpherson (I 1909-1915) (see individual entry).
Martindale fell that day near Guinchy. His name appeared in Despatches two months after his death.
In September 2002 Lieutenant Martindale's 1914-1915 Star, and his British War and Victory Medals came up for auction with Dix Noonan Webbs, specialist medal auctioneers. It is not known who purchased them
