Born 17 Lady Lane, Paisley, son of William (starchwork labourer) & Margaret Lang Leitch, resident of 147 George Street, Paisley.
Member of St Mirin's R.C. Church. When in Paisley was employed with Galbraith’s Stores, then employed with the Tabacco Factory, Newcastle.
Enlisted at Newcastle-on-Tyne November 1915.
