Son of the late General Sir Reginald Gipps, G.C.B., of Sycamore House, Farnborough, Hants.
Educated at Wellington College and RMC Sandhurst, he joined his father's old regiment, the Scots Guards, in 1911, becoming Lieutenant in 1913 where he accompanied his regiment to Egypt. in 1914 he accompanied his Battalion to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force
