Major Sir Frederick Loftus Francis Fitzwygram MC
Campaign:
World War 1
Died:
5.5.1920
2SG
Missing presumed dead in May 1915, but taken prisoner by the Germans
He died on the night of 5 May 1920, aged 35, at Queen Alexandra’s Military Hospital, Millbank, London, of what his death certificate calls “blood poisoning following influenza”. It may well be that the influenza was part of the Spanish flu pandemic that affected 500 million people worldwide and caused between 50 and 100 million deaths between January 1918 and December 1920. But the immediate cause of the blood poisoning seems to have been an accidental cut which Fitzwygram incurred while hedging and which may have been made more acute by the direct or indirect effect of his wounds.
