John Henry Lund Sinclair was born 9 November 1920, the third son of Colonel Thomas Charles Sinclair CBE, RA, of Winchester, and of Lucy Iris Sinclair, the sister of Lieutenant-General Sir Otto Marling Lund KCB, DSO (I 1905-1909). He had two older brothers at Winchester - Christopher (I 1929-34), who commanded a battalion of the Rifle Brigade, and won two MCs in 1941, one at Beda Fomm and one at Sidi Rezegh, and Michael (I 1931-1936), who was killed trying to escape from Colditz.
John came to Winchester College in September 1934 from the Revd PC Underhill’s school at Wellington House, Westgate-on-Sea. He was in I House, Turner's (also known as Hopper's). Between them, the Sinclair brothers covered ten years at Hopper’s and made a valuable contribution to the life of the House and School.
John was in Sixth Book, a Senior Prefect, a good golfer and fencer, a cross-country runner, and made some mark in debate. He went on to Trinity College, Cambridge, in the autumn of 1939 where he took a Second in French before going to the RMC OCTU in 1940. He gained his commission in the Scots Guards on 8 March 1941 and took great pride in his platoon. John, like his brothers, was reported as a first-rate officer.
He went to North Africa at the end of 1942 and was wounded in Tunisia in April 1943, but re-joined and went on to serve in Italy, having been promoted Captain. He was wounded again but recovered in time to see service at Anzio in February 1944.
John was killed, aged 23 on 8 February 1944 having just successfully completed a valuable reconnaissance. He lies in grave XX.D.12 of the Beach Head War Cemetery, Anzio.
