Charles Edward Mary de la Pasture was born on September 15, 1879, at Caley Hall, Pool-in-Wharfedale, Yorkshire, England; his birth was registered at Wharfedale in the October quarter of the year. His parents were Gérard Gustavus Ducarel de la Pasture (the 4th Marquis de la Pasture) and his second wife, Georgina Mary Loughnan de la Pasture.
In the UK census data for 1881, Charles is living with his parents and one sibling at Caley Hall, Pool-in-Wharfedale, Yorkshire.
By the time of the census in 1891, Charles is a student at St. Hugh's School, Old Hall Green, Standon, Hertfordshire. Between 1892 and 1895 he was a student at Downside School, near Bath. Soon after, he joined the Army and was given a commission with the Oxfordshire Light Infantry.
Charles was appointed as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Scots Guards on September 22, 1900.
In 1907 Charles was promoted to Captain and was then appointed as ADC to General Sir F. Forestier Walker, the Governor General of Gibraltar, until 1910.
On April 20, 1911, Charles married Agatha Mary Mosley at St. Mary the Crowned, Gibraltar. They would have no children.
