Born in Coatbridge on the 20th October 1911 to James and Annie Brogan; husband of Sarah Brogan, of Girvan, Ayrshire
Enlisted at Ayr on the 23rd July 1940, I was a labourer by then staying at 24 Ardmillan Road, Girvan.
In December 1943 the 1st Battalion Scots Guards arrived in Italy, and joined the 24th Guards Brigade as part of the British 1st Infantry Division.
Brogan arrived mid-January 1944 and took part in the landings at Anzio. 1SG joined the 6th South African Armoured Division in late March 1944. 1SG came to the front in early May, seconded to the British Eighth Army in Cassino. On the 28th May, 1SG advanced northwards towards Rome and then Orvieto..
Brogan died alongside the Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Guy Taylor, Captain William Vestey and Guardsman William Autherson under a bombardment of concentrated enemy mortar fire at the battle of Chuisi.
The four Scots Guardsmen were buried where they fell and on 23rd June 1945, just 15 days after VE Day, they were finally laid to rest in Bolsena War Cemetery in Italy.
My headstone reads
“ To the world he was only one, To us he was all the world”
My name is John Brogan and I will forever be 33 years old.
